Moving from operational accounting into controlling in Germany
The skills gap is smaller than people fear — if you can show ownership of numbers beyond booking entries. A grounded path for the switch.
Operational accountants often assume controlling requires an entirely new profession. In practice, the bridge is ownership of interpretation: explaining why a variance exists, proposing a corrective action, and presenting numbers to people who do not live in the ledger.
Skills that transfer well include closing discipline, ERP navigation, and familiarity with account structures. Gaps that need deliberate work include contribution-margin thinking, investment case basics, and the habit of challenging budget owners rather than only recording their postings.
A credible path inside your current employer beats a cold leap. Volunteer for the monthly forecast commentary, ask to join a Kostenstelle review, or own a small process improvement that reduces manual reconciliations. Document those contributions on your Lebenslauf with outcomes, not effort hours.
External applications should target Junior Controller or Controlling Assistant postings that name HGB or ERP experience as welcome. Stretch titles that skip that bridge invite rejection. Patience here is not passivity — it is sequencing.
